Rupture of the Esophagus by Compressed Air

Abstract
Esophageal rupture, causative violence of which is sudden inflation of compressed air from the mouth, is an entity appeared rarely in the literature.
The presenting case illustrated such as an accident abserved in a 20-year old boy.
The violence produced a longitudinal tear of the esophagus, 2.5 cm in length at the right posterolateral portion of the hypopharyngeal esophagus.
Besides that, there also were laceration of pharyngeal and laryngeal mucosa, and rupture of right mediastinal pleura at the level of 4th thoracic spine.
Late complication of right pyothorax which resulted from contamination downward through the rent in right pleura via mediastinal fistular canal.
Treatment was directed in order, gastrostomy, followed by closure of the esophageal rupture utilizing the sternocleidomastoid muscle as prombage into the fistular canal and cover on the suture line.
Next, decortication of the right pyothorax were performed. Postoperative course and the results were successful.
